With the current outbreak of the coronavirus, it seems life as we’ve known it has come to a sudden halt. Things are changing very quickly! Walking into a store to buy milk will no longer be an option without trying to protect ourselves from the questionable bacteria lurking around. With many protective measures now offered, what are you going to be doing differently to ensure your health and safety?
As the coronavirus can be easily spread through respiratory droplets, ensuring limited exposure of your face is key! With a high demand for face masks, it isn’t easy to find any face masks to help protect ourselves. Because of this shortage, it can leave us feeling uncertain and concerned about everyday life, even when you’re just waiting in line at the grocery store! We believe that everyone should feel safe, so we are going to help show you how to create your own face mask and provide you with a face mask pattern… For free!
Download your free in-the-hoop face mask design
Our team here at Embroidery Legacy is trying to do our part in battling this pandemic by offering a free face mask design to help protect you against the spread and transmission of the coronavirus. Because of the face mask shortages, we are providing face mask design patterns for adult large and small, as well as child large and small sizes.
However, with this free design, we do ask you a small favor. Please not share these design files with others, but rather direct them to download them themselves from this page of our website. We hope that this free download will ensure better personal protection for yourself, your friends, and your family. Or, if you are distributing them as a good deed, we thank you for your active role in helping to protect the community.
You may also use these face masks for commercial purposes. With the decline in small businesses, we would like to help contribute to growing the economy. There is nothing wrong with filling a void in supply and helping to fill the demand for these masks for profit! If you previously ran an embroidery business that is now suffering or you’re currently out of work, your family still has to eat. So feel free to sell these finished embroidered masks (but not the digital design files themselves).
The dimensions of these design files are 200 X 300.
Our face mask design files are production-friendly
This in-the-hoop facemask design was specially digitized to be as production-friendly as possible. The more masks you can create within a given time frame the better. Alongside an incredibly low stitch count (which equals less run time on your machine), tear-away stabilizer is also used because it is the most cost-effective product to use. From a production standpoint, it minimizes finishing time and ensures that the only material needed within the finished mask is the outer and inner material used. Stabilizers left with the product could prevent the airflow necessary.
Supplies required:
The face mask design pattern we are providing for free download has a reduced stitch count, so you can use less resources to produce more products.
The supplies required include:
- 200 x 300 Hoop
- Two Pieces of Tear-away Stabilizer
- Painters Tape
- Stapler
- Two Straps, either elastic (two 7” straps) or cotton (four 16” straps)
- Four 10” x 10” pieces of fabric of your choice, or two 12” x 7” pieces of fabric
Which types of fabric should you use?
Certain fabrics used to create your face masks can help with breathability and the effectiveness of limiting the spread of contagious diseases:.
- Cotton is a great fabric to help filter out large particles and has excellent breathability.
- Nylon is also a recommended fabric as it has a high filtration rate, but it has limited breathability.
You can do a quick check to make sure the material you have will provide some protection by holding it up to the light and seeing if you can see through the fibers. No matter what you choose to make your face mask with, having something covering your face is better than nothing.
In-the-hoop embroidered face mask tutorial:
Part 1
Step 1: Hoop your Tear-away Stabilizer and place on your machine. If you need some assistance for hooping techniques, click here
Step 2: Run placement stitches
Step 3: Lay your fabric over the placement stitches, make sure it lays flat and fully covers.
Lay your fabric over the other side, it can overlap slightly in the middle.
Step 4: Smooth out the fabric. Run the tack-down stitch.
Step 5: Next run the logo.
Step 6: Lay the strap in the top corner and tape in place. Make sure it covers the line so it will get sewn in. Bring the other end of the strap down to the other corner and make sure it covers the bottom line. Tape it in place.
Make sure the tape is outside of the stitching areas.
Step 7: Run the tack-down stitch to hold the strap in place. Make sure both sides grab and are sewn down in place.
Step 8: Take your second piece of fabric and place it face down on top of each side. Make sure they lay as flat as possible.
Step 9: Run the next tack-down stitch. This finishes Part 1. Remove it from your machine.
Part 2
Step 1: Remove everything from your hoop and cut down the middle to separate them.
Step 2: Cut about 1/8th of an inch away from the bean stitch
Just outside of the “bean stitch”
Cut right along the remaining lines.
Cut out the second side the same way.
Step 3: Remove stabilizer from both sides
Step 4: Turn both pieces inside out. Finger press the seams
Step 5: Line up all 4 pieces exactly together.
Step 6: Staple the sides together. Make sure it’s all lined up smoothly
Step 7: Hoop your second piece of stabilizer
Step 8: Run the placement line
Step 9: Position the mask in place, making sure it’s lined up to the guide.
Step 10: Sew the next tack down stitches
Step 11: Remove from the stabilizer and cut along the edge. Turn it inside out.
Step 12: All done! Congratulations you just made yourself a face mask
Comes in Adult large and small, and Child large and small. Includes SVG file.
A commercial machine will speed up your production
Like anything, when it comes to making more masks, you need the right tools for the job. Creating 1 mask at a time on your flatbed machine is a great way to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases for yourself, but if you’re really looking to make a difference creating them for others (whether it be for goodwill or business purposes), having a commercial machine will significantly increase your productivity.
Using the ZSK as an example (given that in our opinion, it is the best commercial machine available), using their sash frame attachment this machine allows you to create 2 masks at a time for step 1 of our tutorial process outlined above, and 6 masks at a time for step 2. Not to mention that the ZSK can also run at 1200 stitches per minute with precision. In comparison, most home machines run between 500 – 1000 stitches per minute.
Using a quality commercial machine can more than triple your mask output!
What’s next?
The next step is to download our free mask pattern by clicking here if you haven’t already.
Let me be the first to thank you for doing your part in helping to stop the spread of this infectious disease! Whether it’s for personal or business purposes, we’re all in this together, and every mask made is another step towards us getting things back (at least somewhat) to where they were before this pandemic struck.

thank you very much for this Free Face Mask design and I will certainly tell my friends about this offer and direct them to your Web Site. Much Appreciated!
Our pleasure and thank you for the support Patricia!
ZSK: The quality of a Rolls Royce with the performance of a Ferrari. I imagine the price it’s alike: an impossible dream…
It certainly is an amazing machine! Price-wise, despite the amazing quality it isn’t as expensive as you may think. It’s comparable to a higher-end flatbed machine you’d find at a dealer store.
I have the ZSK Sprint 5 The price was comparable to a top of the line single needle. This machine is a dream. 🙂 I can do multilples so easily.
Thanks for sharing Cindy!
Thanks! I have seen several DIY masks and I think I have the confidence to ACTUALLY do this one! Your video was great and design looks like it “covers” all the bases!
Happy to hear that Sue!
Enjoy and happy stitching!
how do I get the down load in the PES file?
Hi Faith, click the “Download My Free Design Files Now” button near the top of this article and the files will begin downloading.
Happy stitching!
Thank you
Love the face mask pattern.
Thank you for the free in the hoop mask. This will make the process so much faster.
You’re welcome Stella 🙂
Thank you
appreciate the pattern. It will go a long way in helping out my friends who still require masks.
Our pleasure, enjoy Susan!
My largest hoop is 12×7 can we get a pattern to fit it?
Respectfully
Ellie Hooks
Hi Ellie, sure we’ve just uploaded a new file where the larger design is broken into 2 parts. Try downloading the design from the link above again.
Enjoy!
Good day, thank you for the designs!
We work with Wilcom Embroidery Studio3 and when I open the EMB files that you provided it says that it was designed in a newer version therefore I cant open the file. Is there any way you are able to save the design so that I can also use it?
I will really appreciate your help.
We use the production design for a 6 head SWF embroidery machine.
Kind Regards
Nicky
Hi Nicky,
We’ve just uploaded a new file to accommodate your request (simply redownload the file above). It should work fine now for an older version of Wilcom software 🙂
Enjoy & happy stitching!
I love the idea you came up with. Your mind I bet is never still. I had to laugh though as seamstress by heart desire; when you used a stapler a woman might mention long thin straight quilter pens, but a stapler will do. than you again. I have been watching and trying to learn from your videos as much as I can. I just bought a Janome MC 550e machine to up grade from my Janome 1000. I just about quit watch all others. Your tips work there hit a miss.
Thanks for the kind words, Bennie! I love the quilters pin idea 🙂 Congrats on your new machine & appreciate all the kind words. Glad we can be of help in your embroidery journey 🙂
I may be overlooking but when i download the design it does not have second part part where it sews the half’s together Please help. .
Hi Dawn, the mask is done in 2 steps. Please use the 2nd file to stitch the two pieces together 🙂
I don’t see the file to sew the 2 halves together., step 8 to finish. Am I missing it from download? Is it separate?
Hi Dawn, all files are attached in the download. Please retry downloading the file. 🙂
Hello, which version of the file would I use for the sash frame? Or should I just duplicate the “Mask Master”?
Hi Corey, As sash frame sizes vary with differing machine brands we do suggest you duplicate the Mask Master to best suit your needs. I would suggest color sorting as well to reduce the steps in producing multiple masks. 🙂
Thanks very much for the design, I’m looking forward to stitching these out. I do have one problem though. my laptop does not support the pdf files supplied, so I cannot print off the directions. I have windows 10 so its a new laptop
My pleasure Karen.
That’s odd. There’s only 1 type of PDF file and a new computer should be able to open it. No problem though, the instructions are all on this webpage or you can watch the free video tutorial. Enjoy!
I tried to make this mask today and am very confused. There is no opening left for turning the mask right side out when finished. Did I miss a step? How do you get the mask turned right side out without an opening to do so? Thanks! Up to that point, this mask is the easiest one I’ve tried.
Hi Lois, Please be sure to watch the video so you don’t miss this step! 🙂 You can also refer to Part 2 Step 2 in the PDF 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying the masks!
This mask is amazing! Best in the hoop design I have found! Thank you so much! Glad that I just bought my first multi needle so I have a large hoop for it!
Thanks for the kind words & glad you’re enjoying the files Sarah!
Hi there! Thanks so much for the free downloads. Is there any way you can contact me? For some reason I’m only able to get the 2nd part on my machine.
Hi Linda, our pleasure! We’re happy to do our part in helping to combat this pandemic. If you have a question regarding this free project I would suggest you join our Facebook group and post your question there for a fast response: http://www.facebook.com/groups/EmbroideryLegacy/
I must say this is by the far the best one I have made. I am a bit lazy so I attach my elastics after it is sewn. Thank you so much.
Happy to hear that! Our pleasure Lotta
The pattern for this mask is one of the best I’ve seen. Kudos! But…would it be possible for you to create a pes file to make this in a 5×7 hoop?…perhaps half at a time? Many of us have this size limitation. Thanks so much!
Hi Ren, the files are split so they can run on each half independently, and they can be found in the split folder.
I have your design.. I am struggling with the final step sewing opening closed. I can’t seem to find the pattern for the second hooping so I can’t finalize the mask. Any suggestions?
Hi Michel, the original folder has both files included. The folder for smaller hoops just has the split files. Please try downloading the file again and see if it’s there for you.
Hi. I have made the mask very successfully. Thank you for the pattern. One query I have is in the files there are templates files
I do not understand what these are for and if I need to save. I use the PES.
Many Thanks
Pauline Britten UK
Hi Pauline, congratulations on making the mask! Our pleasure on providing the pattern. You do not need to use/worry about the template files. Especially if you have already completed the mask successfully. Thanks for doing your part in helping to combat the pandemic ?
Thank you so much for the free Facemask Patten & pleases all stay safe in theses Crazy Times
My pleasure Gail, hope you and your family stay safe as well.
Thank you for this wonderful mask design. I had to use the option to do one size at a time…my question is…is there a file to sew the two parts together or do I need to use a sewing machine for this?
Thanks again
Hi Joyce, yes we provide a file to sew the two parts together. Use the file that has the design name like this “Mask Master Adult LG_2”, look for the “_2”, this indicates that it is the design that sews the two side together.
Hello when I download the design I don’t get the JEF format would really love to make it
Hi Helen, please try to download the file again. The .jef format should be included in the zip.
Good day. Thank you for the free mask design it’s really great. My grandson wants me to make him one but he wants a face (maybe cartoon or animal face) embroidered on the Centre front covering both sides of the mask. Do you have a free design that will do this? It will be greatly apreciated.
Hi Cindy, you can take a look through our categories here https://www.developdigitizingmadeeasycom.bigscoots-staging.com//machine-embroidery-design-categories/
John thank you for this but just wonder why the staples? Please stay and well
Suse Spriggs
Hi Sue, the staples are used to ensure both sides of the mask stay in place while being stitched 🙂
Hi I am trying to down load the free ith face mask but don’t seem to be able to when I hit the link to download
Can you please help for my machine I need JEF format please
Hi Helen, please be sure to check your downloads folder on your computer 🙂 The JEF format is included in the folder.
I am new to embroidery, I have successfully completed both halves of the mask, however, I am a little confused as to where I find the placement lines to attach both pieces? I have the second sheet of stabilizer hooped but can’t locate the placement lines to put both pieces on and then attach them. Thank you for the pattern and any help!
Hi Tammy, you can find the file within the folder you downloaded to create the project 🙂 Please use the file called “Mask Master”
Love the pattern. And thank you for sharing. When I follow the instructions, I may be missing something. My mask has a seam down the middle on the inside once completed leaving the seam with a raw edge. Is this the way it is suppose to look once completed?
Glad you like the masks Clara! 🙂 Please be sure to give the video another watch to ensure you’re following all the steps correctly. The seam should not have a raw edge.
Please tell me where/how to find the PDF instructions for your mask. The only PDF files I found were of the mask. I didn’t find a link anywhere in the tutorial either. I made a mask the other evening which turned out great, but I would love to have a printed copy of instructions rather than follow them on my computer.
Hi Linda, there is a pdf in the face mask file called “ITHFaceMaskstutorial1” that will list the instructions for you.
Where do I find the pdf file for the mask?
Hi Val, the pdf file is included when you download the face mask zip.
Can you use a 6″ x 10″ hoop for the child size?
Hi Mary Kay, yes child sizes require a 5×7, and adult sizes require a 6×10 hoop.
Great mask, thank you. I have the same problem with a raw edge on the inside of the completed mask. I watched the video again as you suggested above and I still have the raw edge on the inside when completed. So I don’t know what I am missing.
Hi Linda, you’re most welcome! Yes there will be a raw edge seam running down the center of the mask.
What size do most adults wear? Small or large? Thank you so much for this!
Hi Kim, sorry there is no definite answer, it depends on a persons face shape and structure.
I have an older Brother machine and it is not reading the PES files. Any suggestions?
Hi Joyce, try the .dst file and see if it will work for you.
Hello!! This is a great tutorial and love ho easy it is to make the masks! Since there is multiple sizes, do we use the 4 10×10 or 2 12×7 cutouts for both adults and kids or do we have different cut out measurements?? Sorry if I missed that! Thanks for the help! This is amazing!
Hi Leena, the child masks are smaller so you won’t need as big of a piece of fabric.
Hi John, Thank you for this design. I’ve been trying to find a mask design that I can actually embroider on as well. Is it possible to make this mask in a 5″ X 7″ hoop? I have a Brother PE800 and my largest hoop size is 5×7. Thank you!
Hi Treesa, you’re most welcome! The large and small child mask sizes will fit in a 5×7 hoop, but the adult mask will need a 6×10 hoop.
I cannot download this mask .I’m not sure why.
Please try again & check your download folder 🙂
I did find the PDF tutorial, but I had to download again. Thank you for this mask pattern. I have made several for my family. Everyone prefers it to the other styles (non ITH) I’ve made. In fact my granddaughter who started college this year asked me for some more. Again, thank you.
You’re most welcome, thanks for your support Linda! Stay safe.
Thank you very much for th mask and the tutorial
You’re most welcome Claire
Great pattern but the video Step 11 placement lines in the .jef pattern was not there so couldn’t complete the mask unfortunately.
Hi Agnes, check for a file called “Mask Master Adult” (or whatever size) Lg_jef… that will be if you’re making the one where you sew both sides at the same time.. if you’re making the one where you sew one side at a time, then look for a file called “Mask Master Adult Lg_2.jef”
Good evening all,
I downloaded the files for the face mask without any issues. There seems to be one file missing under the Mask Master Adult Large mask for the exp files. the second file is there for the attachment of the two pieces, and the template. But I do not see the first file (Mask Master Adult Lg_1). I see the first file under pes files and hus files but not exp files.
Thank you very much
Hi Lynn, please try downloading again and see if the file is there
Download and extract just fine. was able to transfer the child large (all parts ) to my thumb drive, but none of the .pes will transfer is this locked or another site to download from
Hi Denise, did you unzip the files?
So excited, getting my multi-needle on Monday — this will be my first project: making masks for my Granddaughter’s college graduation (since I cannot attend, putting my signature logo on them 🙂 )
What a great idea Beverly! Enjoy 🙂
Thank You so so much! Quicker esp with logo’s add on. Perfect!
I have tried to download your program but when trying to extract the files I get a message that says there is a problem encrypting the file. Is there a way you can send the file to my email?
Hi Bernardine, if you’re having trouble accessing the file please email our office at contact@embroiderylegacy.com
I downloaded the files and unzipped them. During the extract part a message came up saying unable to encrypt the files so nothing could be saved
We haven’t encountered this problem before Bernie, can you please try to download the file again.
I’m a little confused – which is nothing new. I have a template file – what and when is that used? I have the master face mask and SM_2 file. My question is when is the template used? Or is it not?
In watching the video – several times I might add – It does not address if we need to do the individual sides as in left side and right side. Pdf does not either. Are there instructions someplace that just address how to do each side individually? Or are we to pull that out and just skip steps in the PDF?
Lastly, in watching the video it appears there is a raw seam down the middle of the mask against the skin. Reading some posts above it seems that this is a concern. I tend to agree that with wearing a mask all day this may be an issue. Thoughts?
Thank you – I love the concept of this pattern and I am eager to try it.
Hi Nita, no worries! The steps are the same, just one side at a time, and yes a raw edge is left down the center.
I am looking forward to trying this ITH mask. So glad you added the second file to finish it completely in the hoop! I do have a question about the elastic–the instructions say 7″ length, but what about for the child-sized ones? I assumed it will be shorter, but was hoping for set length for each size mask.
Hi Anita, 6 inches would likely be good for a child size mask, depending on the size of the child it will vary. I would try and do a measurement before hand if possible.
Thank you for the free mask. I find your company such a pleasure, helpful, and generous
. Thank you again
No problem Linda, thanks for your wonderful feedback 🙂
Thank you so much for this pattern! I can’t wait to stitch it. I made another one from another company and had so many problems. I look forward to other designs you have. I am so glad I found you!
You’re most welcome Kay! Let us know how it turns out for you.
Do you remove the staple??
Hi Lesley, the staples get cut off. Please refer to Part 2 Step 11 in the tutorial. When you cut along the edge of the stitching, the part that has the staples in is cut off.
Hi there, love this mask pattern, so easy to make and takes no time. The biggest percent of the time is setting up the stabilizer. One thing I have done is after completion, I sew a 4cm long, 1cm wide dart in the middle either side, pressing the dart upwards. This fits the mask to the face without any gaping. My family love them.
Thanks for your feedback Trudie 🙂 glad you and your family enjoy them!
